Fit Momma Fridays

I am so inspired by other mothers who find time for taking care of themselves with all of the responsibilities of motherhood. Every Friday I will feature a Fit Momma who makes time for fitness. Let's meet:

Rachel of Fit Mommy

Name:   Rachel Nieman

Children: I have two wonderful boys, Rhys who is 3, and Finn who turned 1 this October.

Occupation:   I am a licensed Physical Therapist, but I was lucky enough to quit working in June to stay home with my boys and pursue a couple of my long time goals.  One is to becoming a Stott certified Pilates instructor and the other is to work on building my website to help women everywhere.  At some point in the future I would like to combine physical therapy and pilates to work with injured people…but I’m not quite there yet.

Favorite Fitness Activities:   I love Yoga and Pilates.  I have been trying to do some Yoga every day.  It makes me feel so good!  And I really love Pilates too, there are so many benefits to it, beyond the obvious strengthening and toning.  I also love hiking and rock climbing, but I haven’t been able to do much of that recently since we moved to Florida.

How do you find time for fitness?: It is really hard with 2 kids.  I try to get up in the morning at least an hour before the kids.  When I can do that it is so great because I can really focus on myself.  My youngest son is a VERY light sleeper though, so some mornings getting up early doesn’t work out.  When that happens, I try to fit something – anything in during the day.  Even if it is 10 minutes of something random.  The other day I did some lunges squats and leg lifts while I was paying outside with my 3 year old because I didn’t have time for anything else.

Tips for other moms: I have lots of them on my website.  I’d say the best advice is to stop judging yourself based on what you do (or do not) do.  We get into the habit of being perfectionists and getting down on ourselves if our houses aren’t perfectly clean, our bodies aren’t perfect, the list goes on and on.  Focus on what you can and are doing, and quit criticizing yourself over what you aren’t.
